I feel that the secondary two Language Arts lessons are as enriching and enjoyable as the secondary one LA lesson. Mr Bryan Lum's teaching is every bit as good as Mr Jason Erik Lundberg's and arguably more interesting with more group work. I feel that my writing skills have improved since the start of the year with more knowledge of figurative language. I like this programme as it is much more enriching than normal english. In normal english, what the teacher talked is basically textbook stuff and focus mostly on vocabulary and grammer. however, in LA, there is a much wider approach. There is a different topic every term, and I feel that this is a better way than studying everything at the same time.
However, I feel that this module can be improved. For example, we only practice a certain part of english like composition in term one. I feel that we can also learn to write poems as it is similar to short stories. Since Hwa Chong is a future school, more IT lessons can be incoporated into the lesson. There should also be a wikispace site for LA and all the essentials should be in there.
I agree wholeheartedly with what you have said. Mr Lum's lesson is truely much more engaging and interesting than Mr Lungberg's lesson although both are equally fruitful. I am sure we can learn more independently if more IT lessons are incoporated into the lesson.
回覆刪除As compared to last year, this year's LA lessons are a lot more engaging and is certainly more fun and interesting. Last year, our teacher read out loud word for word (or sometimes paraphrased) for every stack of notes that he gave out for fear of us being illegitimate. In contrast, this year, our teacher taught us on LA based on his own experiences and his understanding of the topic.
回覆刪除By 'normal english', I assume that you are referring to Literature taught in most other schools. It does have many of its advantages as compared to the normal textbook-based curriculum. This has already been discussed early this term.
Although both years included group discussions, I feel that this year's group discussions have been more fruitful and engaging. I also feel that I have benefited a lot, as I can get exposed to a wide range of views on a particular subject and not be too subjective.
This year, our teacher also emphasised more on the presentation of ideas and pronunciation of words. We were thus able to not only be able to hear and understand our peers' views more , but also glean more understanding on oral communication skills.
Regarding your idea of increasing the usage of Infocomm in lessons, I feel that face-to-face teaching is still essential and a lot more effective, and can never be replaced by electronic means.
Yulong,
回覆刪除I actually agree on your point about the preference of face-to-face learning
